Using TADs for Targeted Tooth Movement in Dallas

Temporary anchorage devices, or TADs, are small titanium screws used in orthodontics to help guide tooth movement more precisely. In certain cases, they can reduce treatment time and improve overall results. TADs may be recommended alongside braces or even in place of traditional options like headgear.

What to Expect During TAD Placement

To make the process as comfortable as possible, a strong local anesthetic is used to numb the gum and surrounding bone where the TAD will go. Once the area is numb, your orthodontist will gently insert the device through the gum and into the jawbone.

The placement is quick—often finished within minutes. You may feel light pressure during the process, but that sensation usually fades within a day. When the TAD is no longer needed, it’s removed just as easily, without pain and typically in a matter of minutes.

Managing Mild Discomfort

Most patients tolerate TADs well. However, if you feel sore after placement, an over-the-counter medication like Tylenol® can help. Pain that lasts more than a few days isn’t typical—so if discomfort continues, we encourage you to call our Dallas office to check in.

Keeping Your TAD Clean

Cleaning your TAD is similar to caring for your braces. Brush at least three times a day, making sure to clean around the area where the device is placed. We’ll also give you an antimicrobial mouthwash to use twice daily to reduce bacteria and keep the area healthy.
